Hiking Opportunities

The opportunities for hiking in southwestern Utah are virtually limitless. From the middle of St. George every direction that you point to offers world class hiking from aimless wandering across fields of slick rock, to rugged desert canyons, to high alpine mountains. There is likely no other place that offers the variety of hiking environments that this part of the country exhibits. Many places such as state and national parks offer established trails, with maps and signage to keep you on the designated path, yet with square miles of public lands many of the more rewarding hiking opportunities are off trail routes that may consist of ridges, washes, canyon bottoms or just a series of stacked rocks along the bare slickrock wonderland that is this part of Utah.

While there are several lifetimes of hiking opportunities in the region, a great place to start are the established trails in the local parks, and monuments. Check out the pages below to find good advice and directions to excellent established hikes, and if getting far off the beaten path and leaving the crowds behind sounds more appealing, but you dont know where to start,…
